Howlett, Victoria

Victoria Howlett (1945- ) was born in England but emigrated to Australia in 1946. She obtained a Diploma in Ceramics from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1965, then travelled and taught for twelve years, obtaining a Technical Teachers Certificate from Toorak Teachers College in 1969, before setting up a studio in Melbourne and establishing herself as a full-time potter. Her ceramic work draws on the Oribe tradition of painted surface designs. During the 1980s, she moved from rounded vessels and lidded jars to the platter as the form to be decorated, using a well-charged brush and slips coloured with oxide. Always interested in drawing and painting, and keeping sketchbook records of her work, in the 1990s she retrained as a painter, and is now working on a Doctorate at Monash University, exploring landscape and desire. She has continued teaching in tertiary arts institutions in Melbourne, Canada and the Unites States and is currently on the staff at the Australian Academy of Design. Her ceramic works are impressed 'TOR' or painted or incised 'Victoria Howlett'.
