Nichols, Gail
Gail Nichols (1953-) was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. She obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, then worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in northwest Malaysia, before moving to Australia in 1978. She became interested in clay as a hobby while her children were young, then completed a Ceramics Certificate at St. George TAFE in Sydney in 1985 and set up a studio in inner Sydney, where she began experimenting with soda vapour glazing in 1989. After obtaining an Associate Diploma of Art (Ceramics) at St George TAFE in 1996, she made this the subject of a PhD at Monash University under Owen Rye, completed in 2002, and also of a book, Soda Clay and Fire (American Ceramic Society, 2006). She is now based at Mongarlowe, near Braidwood, New South Wales and teaches at the ANU School of Art, as well as holding workshops on soda vapour glazing in Australia and overseas. She marks her works with an impressed 'GN'.
