Peter Deck
Peter Deck and his wife Elizabeth set up their Elliott Schoolhouse Pottery in a former primary school in Northwest Tasmania in 1979. In 1984, he began potting full-time, wood-firing using a mixture of local and commercially-prepared materials, and selling his work through a shop in the schoolhouse, at fairs and through outlets in Launceston and Hobart. Articles he authored in Pottery in Australia in 1987 and 1989 describe in detail the joys and difficulties of making a living as a wood-firer. In the 1990s, he also experimented in crystalline glazes, writing an article for Ceramics Technical in 1996. In 2003, he was one of the fifty or more graduates exhibiting at "Rye Crop", an exhibition held at Mura Clay Gallery, Newtown, to celebrate the retirement of Owen Rye as Head of the Ceramics Studio at Monash University's Gippsland Campus. Deck himself retired in 2004. Work may be signed with an impressed 'Peter Deck' or 'Peter Deck Tasmania'.
