Beaufort Pottery

Beaufort Pottery was established by Ian and Jennifer MacRae, a couple from Glasgow, Scotland, who had worked as potters in the United Kingdom and South Africa before coming to Queensland to manage Montville Pottery from 1973-1975. After a brief period back in Scotland, they emigrated pemanently to Western Australia in 1978, setting up a studio in two old terrace houses in Beaufort Street, Perth. By 1982, the pottery was producing a range of about 60 domestic stoneware items in three glazes - dolomite matt, decorated celadon and tenmoku with applied iron oxide and titanium. One of its early employees was the Scottish potter Fergus Stewart. The pottery remained at its Beaufort Street location until 1987. MacRae subsequently established studios at West Leederville, Armadale, the J Shed at Fremantle and Hilton, before moving to Denmark, WA, in 2006. He still uses the Beaufort Pottery label for his current work.
