Billie Powell is a Tasmanian potter who lives and works at Eaglehawk Nest, 80 kilometres east of Hobart. She started potting in around 1980, making slip-decorated domestic stoneware. By the time she wrote her entry for the 1996 potters' directory, she was also making smoke-fired wares in an above-ground pit. In The Journal of Australian Ceramics, 43#3, 2004, p. 74, she describes how she has become increasingly engrossed by the process because of its immediacy and unpredictability. Her work is signed 'Billie Powell', sometimes in the form of an impressed stamp. Later work is impressed 'Billie Powell Tasmania'.
