Cooke, Malcolm
Malcolm Cooke (1951- ) trained in Victoria, obtaining a Diploma of Fine Art (Ceramics) from the Bendigo Institute of Technology in 1970, working at Bendigo Pottery and Clunes, then setting up a pottery at Badgers Creek in 1974. He moved to Tharwa, ACT, in 1979 to work with Doug Alexander, the first resident potter at the Cuppacumbalong Craft Centre set up by Karen O'Clery in 1975. When Alexander died unexpectedly in 1982, Cooke took over as resident potter. In 1992, he established the Art Shed Studio and Gallery with Marily Opperman (now Cintra), who had come from Brazil on a working visit in 1988. When the Cuppacumbalong lease changed hands in 1995, its use as a craft centre declined and it is now closed. Cooke still lives and works in Tharwa where, since 1999, he has been involved in projects to place public art in health care facilities. He has used a range of impressed stamps in his professional practice. All include either his full name, surname or initials.
