John Fisher (1921-1995) came to Sydney from Czechoslovakia with his wife Edith on a government contract in 1950 and afterwards the couple stayed on in Australia. Mainly self-trained as an artist, John found work as a modeller and designer in several Sydney potteries before he and Edith set up their own Studio Fisher in Glebe in 1954. In 1956, the pottery was relocated to Kogarah where it continued to operate until 1959. Always a small venture with only eight staff at its height, Studio Fisher produced a range of modernist slipcast and thrown work with abstract slip-trailed decoration. Work is mostly marked with an incised fish.
