Colin Browne
Colin Browne (1949- ) was born in Melbourne, Victoria. After graduating from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1971, he travelled to the UK and Europe, visiting pottery workshops there. Whilst overseas, he represented Australia at the second and third international Triennale Ceramics Exhibitions in Gdansk in 1973 and Warsaw in 1974. On his return to Australia in 1975, he set up a studio in Carlton, Victoria and taught with the Beaumaris Pottery Group, then at RMIT. In 1980, he established the Tarrangower Downs Pottery at Welshman's Reef near Maldon, Victoria. By the time of his entry in the 1985 directory, he had been involved in eight one-man exhibitions and fourteen group exhibitions. He regarded himself as a conceptual artist potter interested in the purity of basic shapes and form. Early influences included Hans Coper and Shunichi Inoue. He ceased potting in the early 1990s. Work may be marked with three dots (painted or impressed) or 'Tarrengower Pottery Maldon, Australia' (impressed) with an impressed 'T' in a circle.
