Julian Davies (1954- ) was born in Melbourne, Victoria. His father was a diplomat and he spent time as a child in New Zealand and Thailand. In the 1970s, he worked as a potter from a studio and gallery in Campbell, ACT. In the early 1980s, he moved to Braidwood and built a house and studio on the mountain range to the west of the town. He still lives and works there, writing, potting and painting. His first novel, Revival House, was published in 1991 and he is now the author of five novels and various stories and essays. He also supports the non profit publisher Finlay Lloyd. The press, established in 2005, is based in Braidwood with a branch in Melbourne. In 2010, Davies opened a non-commercial gallery, Left Hand, in Braidwood. Open only on weekends or by appointment, like Finlay Lloyd it works on the principle of not making money. Davies still pots and exhibits his work at Left Hand on occasion. Work may be marked with what looks like an impressed bunch of four grapes in an oval.
