Elke

Elke Australia was a pottery set up by Karl-Heinz and Ellen David, emigrants from Germany who came to Australia in 1951. After working in Tasmania - Karl-Heinz as a fitter and turner on the hydro electric scheme and Ellen as a governess - they moved to Melbourne in the mid-1950s. There Karl-Heinz worked first for a large construction company, then on his own, building and installing kilns in New South Wales and South Australia. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ellen worked as a decorator. In 1960, the couple bought a block of land in Clayton and built a house and pottery studio there. Ellen designed the range, which consisted of slipcast functional and decorative ware incised 'Elke Aust'. Work was sold through gift and specialty shops and department stores. After Karl-Heinz died in 1979, Ellen continued to make mainly small figures and souvenir items which she sold at the Box Hill Market. These were marked with the printed underglaze stamp 'Handpainted Elke Australia'. Ellen died in 2009 at the age of 87. This information comes from the Rameking.
