David Stuchbery was born in Bendigo where he completed a Certificate of Art at Bendigo Technical College in 1966, a Secondary Teaching Certificate in 1967 and a Diploma of Art and Design in 1973. From 1975 to 1977, he spent time overseas, working with David Eeles in Dorset and Svend Bayer in North Devon, touring potteries in France and Italy and travelling through Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand studying wood fired kilns. Back in Australia, he set up his Woodvale Pottery near Bendigo in 1980 and began teaching at Bendigo College of Advanced Education where he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Ceramics) in 1983. He continued lecturing there full-time until well into the 2000s, becoming Senior Lecturer in Ceramics and Head of Visual Art and Design at the LaTrobe University Bendigo Campus when it was established in 1991. In his private work at Woodvale over this time, he moved beyond functional stoneware to explore sculptural decoration and exaggeration of form, influenced by the glazes of the Song and Ming Dynasties. Now retired from the university, he works part-time as a production thrower at Bendigo Pottery, while continuing to research ceramic glazes and surface decoration. His mark in Skepsi's Celebrating the Master is a painted 'David S'. Woodvale Pottery also has its own impressed mark.
