Stephen (Steve) Drew lives and works in Smythes Creek, a rural area near Ballarat, Victoria. he trained at the Ballarat School of Mines and RMIT and worked as a secondary school teacher for a short time before setting up his pottery at Smythes Creek in 1974. Initially making a wide range of functional pottery high-fired in stoneware and porcelain, in recent years he has been concentrating on one-off pieces, including stylised figurative works inspired by his love of horses. He was instrumental in setting up the Ballarat Ceramic Group, which operated for twenty years, and is a member of the Golden Plains Art Trail. He has an entry in the 1981 directory where his mark is recorded as an impressed 'N' in a circle. The N stands for Nintinbool Potteries Workshop and he also uses an incised 'Drew'.
