Graham Oldroyd (1953- ) was born in Bulli, NSW, a northern suburb of Wollongong. From 1972-3, he studied ceramics at East Sydney Technical College (ESTC) and the Canberra School of Art, developing a research interest in Islamic ceramic forms and glazes which he shared for many years with Alan Peascod. In 1974, he set up a studio at Wombarra, NSW. In 1978, he began lecturing at ESTC, becoming Head of Ceramics from 1980-1984. From 1985-6, he worked in TAFE NSW as Head of the Ceramics Division. In 1988, he set up a partnership with Phillip Lakeman under the name Lakeman Oldroyd Architectural Ceramics. Oldroyd had been working in the architectural field for several years, having been commissioned to complete a large ceramic mural with painter Michael Ramsden for the new Parliament House in Canberra in 1986-7. After working on architectural commissions in Asia over the next few years, Lakeman and Oldroyd eventually moved to Bali, Indonesia, setting up the Pesamuan Ceramic Studio there in 1995. The business is still a going concern, specialising in ceramic tiles. Oldroyd, who now draws and paints, signed his ceramic work with his surname.
