Rick Wood (1949-2007) was born in Sydney. He worked in his family’s book and stationery business in Pyrmont before settling in Mackay, QLD, in 1972. While working as a crane driver, he began pottery classes at the Mackay Education Centre. In 1978, with the help of a grant from the Australia Council, he completed a traineeship with Arthur and Carol Rosser at Eungella. A second grant helped him to set up the Black's Beach Pottery in 1981. He relocated to Slade Point and the Earth Sea Pottery in 1991 and, from 1995, worked with his wife, potter Leonie Sneddon, making decorative stoneware, salt-glazed wares and traditional fish scale crackle stoneware. He completed a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Monash University's Gippsland Campus in 1993 and a Certificate in Science from the James Cook University, Townsville, in 2001. He founded the Pioneer Potters group, helping to advance the serious study of ceramics in Central Queensland. He has entries in the 1981, 1985, 1986 and 1996 directories, where his mark is given as 'RW' (impressed). He also signed larger works with an incised 'Rick Wood'.
