Alistair Whyte (1954- ) was born in Melbourne, VIC. He obtained a Diploma of Ceramic Design from Bendigo Institute of Technology in 1975 and spent time as a visiting potter under John Edye at Sturt Pottery, Mittagong. From 1978-80, he undertook postgraduate studies in ceramics at the Kyoto University of Arts in Japan. From 1981-82, he trained with master potter Hirokuni Katsuno. He also has a Graduate Diploma of Education from Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, obtained in 1989, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Japanese Linguistics from Monash University, obtained in 1994. In the 1988 directory, he is based in Warburton, VIC., where he still lives and works. He specialises in fine porcelain but also makes a diverse range of ceramics using other clays and firing techniques. Work may be marked with a painted 'AW' or a painted or impressed 'Alistair Whyte'.
