Sylvia Halpern (1918-2008) née Black was born in Japan and started school in China. At 14, she was sent to school in England and she worked in London as a stenographer before coming to Australia in 1940. She trained as a potter at the Melbourne Technical College and was modelling and casting in earthenware when she met and married Stanislaw Halpern in 1943. Later she married his brother Artur (Artek) Halpern, who had migrated to Australia in 1945. In 1950, the couple set up a workshop at Huntingdale, Melbourne, employing a small team to make production ware under the name SYLHA. They later moved to Warrandyte. Artur was one of the founding members of the Potters' Cottage there in 1958 and Sylvia joined in 1961. Her work featured in the “Connections 4″ exhibition held at the Potters’ Cottage (now the Potters’ Gallery) in October 2003 to celebrate 45 years of operation. At that time she was still living in Warrandyte. Her works are marked with a painted or incised 'Sylvia Halpern' or 'Sylvia H'.
