Martin Boyd Pottery. Two-piece vase
[373]

  • Vase
  • Unassembled view
  • Mark
  • Scarcely visible chip
Unusual cylindrical vase made in two pieces. The upper piece can be lifted from the base to refresh the water without disturbing the flower arrangement. Both pieces are glazed a glossy white which looks almost lilac in some lights, and there is actually a wash of lilac on the rim. The top piece is decorated with fine leaf brushwork in a pale teal or Persian green.

The lower piece is incised 'Martin Boyd' on the base and both pieces have an incised 1 in a circle.

When assembled, the vase stands 30 cm high. The lower piece is 10 cm high and 12 cm in diameter. The upper piece is 26 cm high and 12.5 cm in diameter.

Both pieces are in excellent condition, with no crazing, cracks or repairs. There is one scarcely visible chip on the unglazed base of the upper piece which is not visible at all when the vase is assembled.

Provenance: Private sale, 2005.
