Ian Clare is a potter based near Hobart, Tasmania. He spent his childhood on field trips with his potter parents, to gather clay bodies. From 1975-1978, he was apprenticed to Shigeo Shiga at Terrey Hills, NSW, learning to wedge clay, and in his last year, to throw. He then completed the three-year Diploma of Art at the University of Tasmania Launceston campus from 1983-85, before setting up his studio at Stanley in Northern Tasmania, where he started to develop his Marine Life range. In 1993, he moved to the Huon Valley in Southern Tasmania. In 2007, he spent time at the Nalanda Buddhist Monastery in Lavaur, France, with the sculptor Jonathon Partridge. His body of work has been strongly influenced by his parents' experiments with high-fired stoneware, his training with Shiga and the Tasmanian coastal environment. He makes beautiful forms with richly coloured, dense glazes. His work is signed with an incised or impressed 'IC' monogram which may sometimes be hard to see under the glaze.
