John Mawhinney (1950- ) was born In Belfast, Northern Ireland. He trained as a civil engineer in Bendigo, Vic., in the later 1960s/early 1970s, but by 1978 was working at Kalang Pottery in Bellingen NSW. During the 1990s, he worked at Jeff Sosower's Southern Cross Pottery before setting up the John Mawhinney pottery in Bellingen in 1999. He holds a Graduate Diploma (2000) and a Masters (2003) in Visual Arts Ceramics from Monash University, and has exhibited widely in the Coffs Harbour area. His works may be painted or incised 'John Mawhinney' or 'John M' or, from 1999, painted 'John Mawhinney Pottery'.
