Henry Hatton Beck (1901-1994) was born in Cassilis, Victoria. After an adventurous youth, he set up a pottery studio and kiln in Oakleigh, and established a working relationship with Merric Boyd in nearby Murrumbeena. During the 1930s, Hatton worked in commercial potteries in Melbourne. In 1939, he married Lucy Boyd and set up the Altamira Pottery in Murrumbeena. In 1943, they sold the pottery to Arthur Boyd and, in 1948, moved to Brisbane where Hatton taught pottery at the Central Technical College. In 1961, they moved back to Victoria, where Hatton continued to teach and to make pottery until his mid eighties. Hatton painted or incised his post-war work 'Beck'.
